Great Divide Tours - Accessibility

Great Divide Tours offers self-drive 4WD tagalong tours all over Australia. Various styles of tours are available including camping (tents or swags), camper trailers, off road vans and tours where accommodation is provided either in motel/hotel rooms, cabins or vans in caravan parks and hostel style accommodation. The tours will take participants to remote locations that usually require the capability of a four wheel drive vehicle to access. Some tours will include walks to lookouts, swimming holes, natural or historic features and in most cases these walks are on either formed or unformed trails where there is uneven, rocky or soft ground. Stops for morning tea and lunches are usually in remote locations where the ground is unformed earth or natural clearings. Facilities can vary from flushing toilets to typical National Park long drop toilets.

As a result, participation in our 4WD tagalong tours requires a degree of mobility, agility and self-sufficiency. All drivers of vehicles must hold a valid driver’s licence for use in Australia; hence they must meet the various state or territory requirements to hold a driver’s licence. The driver also needs to have the necessary mobility to exit their vehicle and move around camp sites and other points of interest given the terrain that might be found at that location.

The following covers all participants in our tours.

Wheelchair Guests

Our tours are suitable for wheelchair guests where their vehicle is capable of participating in a 4WD tour and where they can access or egress the vehicle on unformed natural terrain and in the event of camping trips, where their wheelchair is set up for use on unformed ground. Wheelchair guests will also need to address their own toilet requirements bearing in mind that the nature of the tour means wheelchair accessible toilets are unlikely to be available.

Vision Impaired

As mentioned, all drivers must have sufficient vision to hold a valid driver’s licence for their state or territory. Passengers in each vehicle irrespective of their vision capability are welcome on our tours. Guide dogs are welcome provided the owner has proof that it is an assistance animal. Any additional restrictions on assistance animals imposed by National Park, council or indigenous authorities must be complied with. For those with low vision*, we recommend bringing a carer* to ensure the best experience possible.
*Discounts unavailable for carers

Hearing Impaired

Guests of all hearing levels are welcome! It may be advantageous that they are accompanied by a person who can pass on the information provided especially during the operation of the vehicles if the hearing impaired person is the driver. Some instructions of four wheel drive application (as well as history and points of interest) are given over the two way radio which each vehicle is required to be equipped with.

Limited Mobility

Average – Moderate Fitness Level Required:
For all of our tours participants should have a moderate level of fitness in order to participate in the activities that may be experienced during the tour, such as walks to lookouts, swimming holes etc, and around the camp site on the camping tours. However, if a person is not capable of undergoing the walks, they always have the option of staying in camp during this time.

Intellectual Disability

Persons with a low level of intellectual disability can attend any of our tours provided they are accompanied by a carer or parent.

Medical Conditions or Pregnancy

Persons with any medical issue or pregnancy should consult their own doctor advising of the nature of the tour they will be undertaking in order to gain clearance from their own doctor. We can provide more details on the trip chosen to assist the doctor make this decision if required. On our extended tours all participants are required to complete a medical form prior to departure which your guide will hold and utilise if you require assistance from any emergency services.

If you are unsure if your chosen tour is suitable for any particular reason, you should contact our office on 02 99131395 and discuss your situation with our staff in a private and confidential atmosphere.
