Red Centre Circle Tour (15 days)

NATURETOURISMCERTnewThis trip idea came to me in 2018 when I completed my Simpson Desert Circle Tour, which was a fantastic trip, and it gave me the idea of holding a similar trip that would take us south to north through the Simpson Desert and then include some of the out of the way places but nonetheless iconic locations in other parts of the magnificent Red Centre.

Commencing in Port Augusta we will visit the famous Prairie Hotel at Parachilna on our way to Marree where we will stay overnight in the old hotel, a great experience. The we track north up the Birdsville Track until we reach the Warburton Crossing which leads into the Simpson Desert. Having recently completed the K1 road in the Simpson, this is a great drive through the desert with a fabulous bush camp. This takes us to Poeppel Corner before we start on the Hay River Track. The Hay River Track crosses many red sand dunes and weaves its way along the Marshall & Hay River beds, passing Lake Caroline on the way to Batton Hill camp. We stop at this Aboriginal camp, participate in a bush tucker tour and view sunset over the nearby Goyder's Pillar.

After this great indigenous experience we continue north to the Plenty Highway and then head west to Alice Springs, where we are booked into the Wintersun Caravan Park for two nights. On our second day in Alice you have time to shop and look around the town before we drive down to view the spectacular sunset over Rainbow Valley where we will enjoy a unique Aussie sausage sizzle as the amazing colours illuminate on the rock face of Rainbow Valley.

Next we follow the Old Ghan Railway route south, diverting our to Chambers Pillar for another amazing sunset on the rock spire of the pillar. Then we continue south on the abandoned railway track all the way to Finke. A visit to the Lambert Centre, the geographic centre of Australia, before driving back to the western edge of the Simpson Desert for a night at the Mt Dare Hotel. Then we continue back towards the Simpson to take a swim in the hot spring waters of Dalhousie Springs. From here we head past the Dalhousie Ruins and Hamilton Station to the Oodnadatta Track pausing at the Pink Roadhouse for a burger before arriving at William Creek.

Whilst at William Creek we have allowed time for you to enjoy a scenic flight over Lake Eyre, or indulge in the latest "must do" trip which is a plane flight and landing in the extraordinary Painted Hills. This area has only had land access via plane since mid 2018, and has been considered by some to be more spectacular than the Bungle Bungles. This is an optional tour. Then we continue to Coober Pedy in the afternoon for our last night together in an underground room.

Tour fee includes mechanical support, satellite telephone support, tyre repair in remote areas, use of our gas BBQ, camping & National Parks fees, a Desert Parks Handbook, Hay River Track access fee & Bush Tucker Tour at Batton Hill. In addition it includes dinner, bed & breakfast at the Marree Hotel, a cabin fro two nights at Alice Springs, sausage BBQ at Rainbow Valley, dinner & camping at Mt Dare, and the last nights accommodation at Coober Pedy.
Note the flight at William Creek with landing and ground tour at the Painted Hills is optional and the cost is $345 per person, or you can include a flight over Lake Eyre also for an extra $280 per person.
