Madigan Line 80th Anniversary Tour (13 Days)

NATURETOURISMCERTnew

This is definitely one of the most adventurous 4WD trips you can ever undertake.

The Northern Simpson Desert, the section north of the NT/SA border & the French Line, is basically nothing but remote desert country. However, it is the scene of the first European crossing of the Simpson Desert by Cecil Madigan in 1939 who used camels to make this epic journey. Madigan’s Line is now a series of camp sites linked by a track that is no more than two wheel ruts through the heart of the desert. Every year just a handful of extremely experienced four wheel drivers tackle the Madigan Line, now you can join them with Great Divide Tours for the 80th anniversary year crossing. This has now become the "must do" crossing of the Simpson Desert but it is still an extremely remote track & a personal favourite of Vic Widman, Managing Director of Great Divide Tours.

The trip commences in Port Augusta & follows the Borefield Track past Woomera to the Oodnadatta Track. We will visit all the great sites ip the Oodnadatta Track including William Creek where you can take the optional light plane flight with ground tour of the amazing Anna Creek Painted Hills. We will visit the Pink Roadhouse, Dalhousie Hot Springs, Mt Dare & Old Andado, then we follow the Madigan Line for its entire length (where permitted) to Big Red & Birdsville. To finish off we will travel the length of the famous Birdsville Track with an overnight stay in the Marree Hotel, before returning to Port Augusta via the Prairie Hotel on the edge of the Flinders Ranges.

Tour fee includes mechanical support, satellite telephone support, tyre repair in remote areas, use of our gas BBQ, camping & National Park fees, and a Desert Parks Handbook. In addition it includes dinner at Mt Dare, accommodation in Birdsville in cabins for two nights, dinner in the Birdsville Hotel one night, dinner bed & breakfast at Marree Hotel, and cabin accommodation at the Port Augusta Caravan Park, plus permits for the Madigan Line.

Note that the flight at William Creek with a landing & ground tour at the Painted Hills is an option & cost is $345 per person, or you can also include a flight over Lake Eyre for an extra $280 per person.
